Labor Movie Night in Duluth

28 union members and community activists look on as the stikes of 1934 unfold into a bloody battle

On July 23rd Union members from the Twin Ports gathered to watch "Labor's Turning Point: The Minneapolis Truck Strikes of 1934" in Wellstone Hall. The documentary done by the University of Minnesota Labor Education Services chronicles the turbulent - and often very violent - strike that nearly doubled the wages of working class truck drivers in Minneapolis.

Twenty eight union members and members of the community gathered to watch the film followed by a discussion of its' impact on the wider labor movement.  July 20 marked the 75th anniversary of a day when two union members were assassinated by thugs hired by the Citizens Alliance - the fore runner to the Chamber of Commerce.  The stirike was a breeding ground for tactics and strategies that were later used in massive organizing drives through the country.  The movie event sparked in interest in those in attendance to continue having cultural events that allow union members and non-union members alike to gather and discuss the current state of affairs and look to our history for lessons and inspiration.

CJ Cannon, member of Workers United 99, comments on how events like the truck strike laid the ground work of the current labor movement

Another event is in the planning stages.  Stay tuned for more information.
